Statement by the Permanent Representation of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe on the occasion of International Day for Protection of Children

It is International Day for Protection of Children today. This Day reminds the adults that they are obliged to ensure the children’s right to life, protection against physical and psychological violence, exploitation and abuse, their right to education, rest and leisure, freedom of expression. It is indispensable conditions for a humane, just and fair society.

The Council of Europe which is one of the oldest human rights organizations in our continent prioritises the protection of the rights of the children. It is the European Convention on Human Rights and some other conventions which guard the rights of children.

Despite all the efforts of the international community the rights of children are still very vulnerable in a modern Europe especially in conflict zones.

The Children of Donbass depict a war. Some of them do it remembering the stories of grandfathers and grandmothers about the Second World War while others do it looking out of their windows. They draw and dream of peace.

We urge the monitoring structures of the Council of Europe, Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Council of Europe member states to pay attention to the real situation of children in Donbass.

We thank Director of the Institute of the Russian Abroad, President of the Lugansk expatriates’ community in Moscow Sergey Panteleev and Head of the Executive Committee of the Public Movement «Peace for Lugansk» Denis Miroshnichenko for provided drawings.

We especially thank all the children who sent their drawings.
